Take me to Waikiki
Oct. 15th, 2006 02:24 pmI just got a call from my mom. The entire state of Hawaii, where she's on a trip for some sort of work thingie, just got whacked by a ~6.3-6.5 magnitude earthquake. Power is out most places. She's fine, but they're getting all their news by cellphone. It sounds like wide-scale Pacific tsunamis have been ruled out, but wave hazards aren't completely ruled out for the Hawaii area.
Anyway, feel free to use this post to help gather news stories and stuff, so I can help keep her and her cohort posted.

EDIT: State of Emergency declared.
EDIT: (copied and added-onto from my summary in comments) From what I'm hearing, there isn't any major loss of life going on. They have unconfirmed reports of injuries, but no real carnage, thank god. Roads and some bridges are destabilized. Flights are still able to land, but some are starting to be canceled before they leave. The real issue is the fact that the power's all out, which is turning communication into an utter cock-up. Oh, and the fact that this is all happening on an island, so you can't just keep walking and reach someplace where it's all still okay.
This is all subject to change. But my mom and her friends are all right. And they aren't panicking or anything like that. Life seems to be going on.
EDIT: Wikinews finally caught up, at least a little bit. They report that the Big Island's power is back on, and that they've closed Honolulu Int'l. They also report that there was a bad amount of damage at Kona Hospital and the Honokaa Long-term Care Facility. I haven't been keeping track of my closed tabs, but I remember reading that they got everyone out of Honokaa (and I think Kona as well?) without any serious injuries.
