Infected with the state of the art
Oct. 27th, 2023 11:05 amSo, we finally got covid, after dodging it for however many years this has been. gdi.
Ruth and I are mostly fine, just unhappy. We've had worse regular colds during the pandemic. Notably, we got the new updated omicron-family boosters a bit over two weeks before infection, so we were at like, peak immunity. I credit that for the easy ride so far. GET THE BOOSTER. Housemate and a few other infected people we know had not gotten the booster, and are having a much rougher time of it. It's still worth trying to avoid this if you can.
We were trying to avoid it. But uh. It turns out the current state of the art in coronaviruses is incredibly virulent. I mean, like nothing I've ever even heard of before.
This came out of a gathering that happened last weekend, and we've been trying to piece together how it traversed it. As best as we can tell, unless everyone involved got infected separately prior to the event, this updated virus is highly infectious ONE DAY after exposure, with symptoms starting two days after exposure.
A lot of the avoidance we've been doing has been predicated on having a couple days of incubation time after exposure, which can give you enough time to cancel stuff and isolate after you learn you've been exposed. Sounds like maybe that era is over and the virus can just do whatever the fuck, whenever it wants to now.
Could be we're wrong about this! The "ten separate infection events" theory actually isn't wholly implausible, given what's going on out there these days. But we have two friends involved who don't get out a lot, and we're very confident that one of them got it at the event on Saturday, and the other got it from her at dinner on Sunday. That's fucked.
