EDIT: Oh, and VoodooPad is turning out to be remarkably great. I'm using the slightly-crippled "lite" version right now(reckon I'll buy once I have a steady paycheck), and I still like it a lot. I'm satisfied now that its document format is "free enough*," and the effortless way it's letting me wrangle my notes is really impressive. I was having a hard time explaining it to people earlier, but I think I've got a better grasp on what it is now: It's a bare-bones word processor (feature-parity with TextEdit in RTF mode) with a racing clutch. Each "document" consists of an arbitrarily large collection of "pages" (RTF files), and any features beyond what TextEdit offers are generally there to let you leap between files with a thought.

I wouldn't use it for everything, but for the uses it fits with, it's a doozy. If you've got a Mac and you're trying to bring a complicated writing project into order, I highly recommend it.

EDIT: Fuckin' sweet, Jaye from Wonderfalls has a tangerine clamshell iBook! Man, I so wish they were still making those and they weren't all G3s that capped out at, what, like 300 Mhz. Those things had some fuckin' quirk to 'em.

* For me, "free enough" means that, within the practices I'm using the software+format for, I can export-and-bail for greener pastures at any time without losing any data fidelity. VoodooPad actually has variable fidelity loss: the XML export is lossless, but you'll have to do some tricksy parsing to get it usable again; the text and RTF export will cost you your links and images; and the HTML export turns the whole thing into a functional web page, but is only available in the $30 registered version. Personally, I say the combination of text, RTF, and XML makes me feel more than safe enough; since it's nearly all text anyhow, all I'd probably have to do with the XML file would be compile a list of aliases and then write a script to do some basic search-and-replace on the resultant text files. BUT THAT WAS TOO MUCH INFORMATION, WASN'T IT.
