This isn't the first time habeas corpus has been suspended in this country. This isn't the first time people have been detained on a whim. This isn't the first time a President has abused his authority to impose sweeping changes in American law (though I think most of us would agree Lincoln was at least doing it for a good cause). Things are getting bad, yes, but we have previously demonstrated the capacity to recover from this level of badness before. There is a non-zero probability we will do so again.

If you require hope to function, then perhaps those facts will you give you some, grim though it may be. I choose to lead a hope-free existence, so for me, this is simply one more problem that needs solving.
