It's the presque vu, I think. Reading Cherry, I had this sense that it was entirely possible that Winterson would do something in the next few pages to really connect with me, and she's such a smart stylist that I knew it would be stunning if she actually did. I could see reading a few more books just to see if she eventually pulls it off.

As it was, it seemed like the sort of book that could be really important for a certain kind of person if they discovered it at a certain time of life. (Kind of like how my sister and I think everyone should read Tom Robbins sometime in the first three years of college but then sort of get over him.) It's just that I'm pretty sure I missed the window, and I have my doubts about having been a person who could've used it in the first place.

That part about the 12 dancing princesses was pretty great, though.
