These are what we're talking about, for the non-northwesterners in attendence. They recently changed the packaging; they used to look a hell of a lot cooler. (At least they were smart enough to keep the stripes.)
Near as I can tell, they changed it in January. But maybe as early as November, if it took a while to sell through the older stock.
And I suspect the word you're looking for is "retro-kitsch." (...compound word.) The old design had a powerful sense of anti-cool, which, at this point in history, was probably working in its favor. And they went and replaced it with something unappealing and foil-y. That is okay, though, because it is just potato chips and I can deal.
Speaking of which, have you seen the fucking Doritos redesign?! Lads, I agree with you that people need to eat fewer Doritos, but that is NOT the appropriate way to do it. Shame.
