The blighted wreck across from my window is the scene of some fucking action lately. First there was an outbreak of sweet graffiti,* which coincided with lots of nighttime shenanigans, and now the cops are popping a huge boner over that thing every night. Then whoever is in charge of the thing started some program of damage control, probably because they were forced by the city or something, and now most of the graffiti is badly and fugli-ly painted-over and they've got Dudes in there every day mucking the place out. Anyway, the upshot is that starting at 8:00 every morning, it's rare for a minute and a half to go by without bringing a huge, amazing, bone-jarring crash from that fucking dump. It bears an uncanny resemblance to the sound of someone throwing toilets, plate glass, and office furniture out of a third story window into a steel dumpster!**

So yeah, I'm spending most of my time at cafés and the library these days.

Aren't neighbours interesting? Your situation sounds far more varied and loud and annoying than living next to a fire station. At least we can adopt them as mascots and watch them jog army-style in the rain.

I've never seen graffiti painted over in a non-fugly fashion. It'd be fun (I think) for a business or whatever to go kind of 'mod' with it. For example:

It's funny you should mention that, because I just happen to ALSO live quite close to a fire station. I haven't really mentioned it because it's not as varied, loud, and annoying as the blighted wreck. =p (And I'm also not right next door to the station like y'all are. It's across the highway from me.)

Man, I SO wish they'd done anything nearly as cool as that.

The one we live by is always busy, since they service all the surrounding small rural areas too. But you can block out fire sirens, or trains or anything mechanical like that after a while. It's people who vary their noise and patterns enough for you to notice and get annoyed.
