So Greg and I watched Old Boy tonight, and we were in agreement -- it was one of those rare, special movies that one actually regrets having watched. It was a skillfully, beautifully, expensively made slice of evil; totally gratuitous, and bad on every level I care about. I am a worse person for having seen this movie.

EDIT: And then I watched some Ouran Host Club and everything was better again. (I finally grabbed the rest of the series.)

I thought Old Boy was pretty damn good right up until the end; the initial scenes where he's a prisoner, the octopus scene and the hammer scene are all great. It's the ending that's terrible - it's an unbelievable situation, and the actions of the characters are ridiculous.

I have an intense, perverse love for that movie, possibly because I can still make Andrew scream just by saying, "Hey, remember when we saw Old Boy?"

Also, Old Boy is by no means the most depraved and creepy Korean action movie. I have no idea what's going on over there. The close proximity to North Korea may be warping people's minds.
