Every time you run an autolink script to boost your page hits and ad revenue, the New York Times kills a simile. Please... think of the similes.

I've said it before: nytimes.com is in desperate need of a copy desk of its own.

Also, "silent as stroke victims"? The hell? Did they think that was less morbid than "silent as corpses"? I'm not sure it is!

I think the goal was to out-morbid the easy corpses simile--but only by a hair. But the robo-link to a news search for stories about actual stroke victims turns it into the linguistic equivalent of a kid throwing a rock through the window of an abandoned building, only to strike and enrage a sleeping grizzly bear, who, in his confusion, bangs into a rotted support beam, setting into motion a Rube Goldbergian chain of destruction that ends with the house collapsing entirely. And then the bear eats the kid.
