I did it: I went and blew my tax refund on an iPad 3G. It's like carrying around An Internet! I'm still working on how it's to fit into my whole thing, but it's really remarkably satisfying to use. Based on what we've seen of the iPhone 4, I'd say you should wait for next year's model if you can manage to, but I do not regret early adopting in the slightest, oh my goodness.

This software keyboard is kind of slow so far, though. It's going to make me a lot more connected to my friends, but you'll all think a lot less of my literacy level once i give up on trying to stay ahead of the typops.

Oh man dude no kidding.

App suggestions? I've been rocking Instapaper for mid-length stuff, Simplenote for text-entry, Twitterrific until Atebits gets an iPad version of Tweetie up and running, NetNewsWire because that's what I use on my Mac, and I'll be playing with Stanza and iBooks trying to figure out how books are gonna work on this thing. (I hatehatehate iBooks' stupid-looking never-changing pagestacks.) What am I missing?

Stanza YES, Instapaper YES, HD Weather (99c worth of OOH SHINY), Tweetdeck, gmail's mobile page (don't use the built in mail app), Marvel Comics app for showing off to people even if you're not into comics, GoodReader for PDFs (I use it for knitting patterns), Netflix streaming because wow it's perfect wtf.

Mostly I use the web browser, Instapaper, Stanza, and Google Maps.

I used Maps earlier today and got future shock and also directions to breakfast.

Awesome, thanks! (What does Tweetdeck do better, BTW? I always got the impression that it was mostly for folk w/ multiple accounts.)

Well, I do have multiple accounts... but what it does is show *anything* in parallel columns: your friends' tweets, direct replies to you, a search on any hashtag or string you're interested in, a twitter list that you want to follow. So for a situation where eg. you're interested in following your own stuff, plus stuff tagged #event or #city, plus @yourfriend/localtweeps or whatever, it's great.

I don't have one. I'm curious about it, but I'll wait until v2 or v3.

Oh yeah, totally! Which, I actually don't picture myself using more than 2gb/mo of 3G, so I'm probably just wasting that extra $5, but I figure I'll go ahead and stick it to the man with the unlimited option until I'm absolutely sure of that.

Chase just got the 4GAndroid whatsit, so I've got his N800, but dang I would love something like the iPad. Only, like, not Apple/ATT. I want what these cell things do, but without the phone part.

Well, supposedly there are folk working on Android tablets for different carriers, and I'm guessing HP is gonna put something together with that newer Palm OS. So hopefully there'll be more options soon! (I think you'd like something like this. I'm pretty much in the same boat, where I was happy just using a shitty old phone, but wanted all the other stuff people use smartphones for.)
