"Apocalyptic." That's the word for these guys' music. All very telegraphed and emotional, and of course we all know I'm a sucker for that. Add in all those weird little bits of story, and I think I've got a few new favorite songs.

Ahem, anyway. So Unnatural Death was pretty all right! In fact, I quite liked it. I think it will have been valuable to see Peter sans Harriet before getting into the meat of the series. I guess he used to have nervous breakdowns a lot? You only get a glimpse of that at the very end, since he's mostly past that by then anyhow, but I certainly believed it. Anyway, there's moral ambiguity, things are deliciously meta (especially considering the c-date of 1927), the mystery and the villain are very well thought-out, and a pre-Cattery Miss Climpson nearly bites it (!!!) in an action-packed denouement. Oh, and plus? Lesbians. (So, so many lesbians.)

Now I'm diving in to Strong Poison. This whole Judge device is a totally uncushioned infodump, but I kind of respect the gumption that takes. It's like, "No, seriously, let's just get this out of the way and move on to the good part."

When I first read Strong Poison, I nearly gave up on account of the prison scene. But now I sort of love it. I like the character of the judge, I like Peter sweating in the seat---and I love, love, love thinking about Harriet sitting there, quietly listening. It is my biggest regret that the filmed version does not play upon that more.

The filmed version fills me with lots of regrets, actually. But at least they cast Peter and Harriet correctly. That's something.

I MEANT THE COURT SCENE.

The prison scenes are, in fact, engraved in my heart.
