On two separate electrical devices lately (a 802.11 repeater and the power cord to my new ricemaker*), I've found stickers warning me that the product contains lead--and then warning me to wash my hands afterwards. What the heck? Isn't the lead safely encapsulated inside the thing? Or do they smear it on afterwards, in a paste? Does it vaporize, or ooze? Are these stickers something relatively new, or what?

Also, internet update: There's a network right across Stevens Ave, probably originating in the Mauna Loa apartments, and if you sit on the front step of my building, right by the columns, it comes in just great. So if I can come up with a hackable Linksys router and a decent directional antenna that I could mount outside, I could probably get internet in my room without a problem. We'll see how that pans out.

Oh, and these tiny birds were totally courting on my window ledge earlier.

* So the other night, right, we got a bunch of new people in at the Annual Fund, and to get across to the new recruits (and the people hand-holding them) that he wanted everyone calling as many people as humanly possible, he offered two $15 Target gift cards to the team of two people (one regular and one newbie) that got the most credit card gifts that night. The guy I was "training" turned out to be a force of nature, and got like six or seven cards; I pulled a respectable three or four, but for a while there, it looked like we were going to win without me getting a single thing.

Anyway, I spent it today on half of a ricemaker.

The lead is inside the sheathing on the cord, yes, but it's also part of the terminals that plug into the wall. The cursory exposure from plugging it in and out isn't gonna amount to much, but you don't want to grind it up and eat it or anything. Aside from that, THAT much copper is more dangerous than the lead, and handling pennies all day hasn't harmed you yet, has it?
