I would like to link you to this pair of posts on Making Light. Read 'em, follow the links, do what you gotta do; I've got nothing to add, myself.
How much Bush & Co. don't care about terrorism
How they calculated the DHS anti-terrorism allocations

Actually, no, I'm sorry, I DO have something to add. It is incontrovertibly clear that the people most eager to sign away all of our freedoms in exchanged for some promised, imaginary safety--the ones scared mewling and shitless by the occasional video of a guy in a turban, the ones who say "everything changed" on 9/11, the ones who actually believe that "War on Terror" means anything, the ones who can countenance the total suspension of habeas corpus down in Gitmo, the ones who don't flinch at the use of torture by the United States of fucking America--by and large, these people have got nothing to fear from terrorism of any sort. The ones who are living in any kind of danger at all are the by-and-large more liberal contingent in America's major cities, and this, THIS is how they're being protected: by the diversion of security funds from our greatest city, the heart of our culture, to the World's Largest Ball of motherfucking Paint.

Meanwhile, America is stuck without a functional opposition party and is staggering under the burden of a national news media where the overriding storyline claims that "every fact about conservatives, no matter how uncomplimentary, is evidence of their homespun authenticity; while every fact about liberals and progressives—no matter how positive—is evidence of our calculating dishonesty."

I think I'm not really liking the political reality of the 21st century.
