This is a pretty short bookpost, but I want to archive all the 2017 stuff out of my log file, so up it goes!

Jesse Ball β€” How to Set a Fire and Why

Dec 11

This was a fast and entertaining read. I enjoyed it, but it took a while to decide whether I liked it. (This is a good time for a reminder that Goodreads star ratings are nonsense and mine are more nonsensical than most.)

The protagonist has a case of Holden Caulfield Disease, and for me the question of whether a book can survive that is "does the story buy into the protagonist's self-mythologizing, or stay critical of it?" I think this one managed to stay aware, but it sure enjoyed dancing close to the ledge for a while.

Andrea K. HΓΆst β€”Β Touchstone trilogy (re-read)

A re-read of something comforting was exactly what I needed just now.
