Jul. 7th, 2006 02:36 amSo I actually DIDN'T get to go see Alison Bechdel read. This is because I flaked. (Realized at 8:15 that I was supposed to be there at 7. Check your calendar every morning, kids!)
But all was not lost. I jetted my ass over there, and managed to show up just as everyone was clearing out. (And they told me that it had been pretty crazy-ass packed, too, so there was no guarantee I'd have seen anything even if I had been punctual.) So I bought a copy of her new book, she drew a little Alison-head in it, I got to say "I love your work!" and she was taller than she looks in pictures. And that's the end of that story, except the part where I bought myself some fresh strawberry-lemon sorbet and took a walk around the Chicago/Minnehaha neighborhood. (Wow, it's really nice down there.)
By the way, that new graphic novel of hers? So good. Plus Houghton Mifflin treated her like a prince on the printing and book design. (I don't know why I think the cutouts in the salver on the front are such a nice touch, but dammit, they are.)
